Our final idea is based in/around the idea of 'purgatory' which is believed to be the place between heaven or hell where you are allocated to either heaven or hell. The characters are unaware that they are dead, nor do they have any memory of their life except one particular memory in which they are granted by a character called Adam (as in Adam and Eve) - Adam is kind of our narrator, he 'runs' purgatory (except we have have called purgatory "placement") and he knows EVERYTHING.). The idea behind the piece is basically telling the audience either how we die, the event/significant event that lead to our death, or a significant part of our lives. In each 'flashback', whoever else is used in the flashback back will have a mask on to show that the character doesn't even know who was involved and to symbolise that these people cannot hold grudges. My character is a teenager who was wrongly accused of rape by his mentally unstable girlfriend, and even when proven innocent after prison, still received massive amounts of abuse in the streets, lost contact with most family and ones who have kept contact don't trust him, and this eventually leads to his suicide. The girl, died the day of the court hearing right at the start before prison and she goes to hell. During the piece we see this girl trying to work her to earn her placement in heaven. Since she has been in hell and in placement for about a year now, when my character arrives she has much more of an understanding about what placement is. However the catch is, it is set up like an AA meeting, so the audience think that it is a place where these drug abusers or criminals have gone, it is not until the end that they find out what it really is. The characters will be sitting in the audience making the audience immersed in the performance.
All the characters are forced to let go of any of their cultural beliefs and 'different' lifestyles to be able to progress in their placement.
